Talbeenah Barley Porridge

Talbeenah is a traditional barley-based food mentioned in the Sunnah. Made from finely ground barley, it is a comforting and nourishing choice for breakfast, a light meal or a warm evening drink.

A hadith narrated by Sayyidah Aishah رضي الله عنها describes Talbeenah as soothing for the heart of a sick person and relieving some grief.

Traditional Preparation

For a simple drink, simmer one tablespoon of Talbeenah with one cup of water over a low heat for approximately 15 minutes, stirring regularly. Add honey to taste.

For a creamy porridge, lightly cook one to two tablespoons of Talbeenah in a little ghee. Add approximately 1 to 1½ cups of milk and ½ cup of water, then stir gently until thickened. Sweeten with honey or dates and add ground cardamom or almonds if desired.

Talbeenah may also be added to soup or broth for a nourishing meal.
